Overview of Navratri festival
Navratri Pooja is the pooja that is completely dedicated to Goddess Durga. She is the Goddess of divine and power who removes all the difficulties of people’s life.
Navratri festival is known to be the most popular and famous occasion celebrated by Hindus in India. The word navaratri is a Sanskrit word which stands for nine nights. Like other Hindu festivals the Navratri festival also has a lot of significance and is especially very important for Gujarati and Bengali people. This occasion is celebrated with lots of devotion and enthusiasm by the people. The highlights of this festival are Dandiya nights and Garba dance. On this day people wear new clothes and pray to the nine forms of Goddess Durga to seek her blessings. The celebration of this festival is dedicated to the various incarnations of the Goddess. The first three days are celebrated to pay offerings to Goddess Durga who is known as Shakti maa, then the next three days are celebrated to dedicate the offerings to Goddess Laxmi and the last three days are celebrated to offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati.
Some of the devotees keep fasts for all the nine days and the last day of the celebration is known as Mahanavami, on this day the nine little girls are worshipped and are treated as the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Their feet are also washed as they think that by washing the feet of these little girls they are giving respect to the Goddess. This is a ritual which is followed in almost every part of the country with great spirits. This festival has now become more of a social festival rather than a religious festival.
The navratri pooja is followed as per the tradition because it is known to have great relevance in the lives of people of India.
People sing various devotional songs in the praise of Goddess Durga and actively participate in the celebrations of the festival of Navratri every year.
This is a festival which comes twice in a single year. It comes in the month of March or in the month of April and the second time it comes in the month of September or in October. There are many religious rituals that are followed in all the nine days of this festival. The navratri pooja is of great relevance and is followed in a traditional manner. Vegetarian diets are followed, by people who do fasting. They chant various mantras and rhymes and place the idols in their houses and worship them.
