In this month the auspicious work such as marriages or buying a new vehicle are generally avoided. But if a person performs vrat, pujas and other rituals to impress Lord Vishnu he or she can get great benefits. The story behind the formation of this Adhik Maas is really interesting. This extra month is formed due to the difference between the lunar and solar years. Generally, there is a difference of about almost 11 days between the two. This difference between both the years goes up to one month in three years.
So an additional month was added to remove the difference between the solar and lunar years. The month of Adhik Maas is also known by the name of Purushottama Maas in western part of the country. It plays very important role in terms of spirituality. The people worship Lord Vishnu because the almighty Lord Vishnu is associated with this month. In the lunar calendar there are twelve months and each month is assigned with a specific god. When the ancient saints did their calculations they got the information about the extra month and they explained its importance in the Vedas too.

Giving charity, fasting and performing havan and homas in this month are considered auspicious. The person performing the prayers with cleanliness and pure heart get the relief from all sort of all sufferings. Also visiting Lord Vishnu temple and taking bath in the holy water can bring great benefits in the life of an individual. Recite the Bhagvad Gita and sleep on the floor and also eat one time vegetarian meal in whole day during this month.
