Adhik month story to know what it is
Adhik Month is also known as Mal Maas. Adhik month story is very interesting. This month is added in the lunar calendar of Hindus in every three years (32 months approx) to balance the lunar calendar with the solar calendar. Adhik month 2012 starts from 18 August and will last up to September 16. According to the astronomical readings this month is referred to as intercalary month.
Why this month comes is really a matter of investigation. Well in the solar calendar one solar month is formed when the Sun completes is one cycle. This solar month is of 30.44 days. Since there are twelve months in a year so a solar year has total 365.28 days. Similar is the concept with the lunar year. In one lunar month there are 29.53 days which makes one lunar year of 354.36 days. Due to this there is about 10.92 day’s difference between the both (lunar and solar year). This difference rises to about one month in about three years or approx 32 months. So, a extra month was added to balance this difference.
This Adhik month 2012 is known as Mal Maas or waste month because sun does not enter any sun signs in this time period. The people consider this month as inauspicious and the auspicious work like marriages are avoided in this month.
In the Hindu mythology it is said that this extra month did not have any god assigned to it. So, it complained about this to Lord Vishnu who called this month as Purushottam Maas. Therefore this month is dedicated to Lord Shri Krishna and is ideal for various japas, havans and homas.
Various special pujas and prayers are performed to impress Lord Vishnu. Taking a dip in the holy pilgrimages is also believed to be very beneficial. The people perform vrat and perform prayers to get blessings of Lord Vishnu.
