Describing the Spiritual Significance of Mahashivaratri
Lord Shiva is the God of destruction and meditation. Meditation destroys everything in us which is unnecessary. The negative forces present within us are destroyed by the meditation, so that the new positive energies or the Shiva elements can replace those negative forces.
On some auspicious days, these positive energies are much stronger than other normal days.
One such night is Mahashivaratri or the “Grand Night of Lord Shiva”. The spiritual significance of Mahashivaratri is such that the grace of Lord Shiva is at its maximum. By celebrating this festival, the devotees feel the Lord’s grace and get soaked in that positive energy. The devotee is able to defeat all his worldly weaknesses such as anger, lust, possessiveness, jealousy, insecurities, etc and is charged with spiritual energies to worship Lord Shiva with full sincerity and devotion.
As per the Hindu religious calendar, Mahashivaratri falls on the 14th day of the Phalguna month. As per the English calendar, this corresponds with late February or early March. This period is liked by Lord Shiva the most. The spiritual significance of Mahashivaratri is there for all living beings. The method of celebrating this festival is explained in the ancient Hindu scripture of Shiva Purana. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself explained this entire method, hence no deviation from it is allowed.
The spiritual significance of Mahashiavaratri is such that it is believed that the devotees who celebrate this festival as per the laid down rules will attain moksha or salvation and will be freed from the continuous cycle of life and death. He will also get rid of all the effects of the sins committed by him, making him achieve purity of body and soul.
For the women, the spiritual significance of Mahashivaratri is very special. Married women observe fast and worship Lord Shiva and his wife Goddess Parvati for marital bliss and happy married life because both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are considered to be the perfect couple. Unmarried girls also observe fast and worship Lord Shiva to get a good husband.
Lord Shiva does not discriminate between his devotees. During the worship, offerings are made to the deity in form of several items such as milk, honey, yoghurt, ghee, sugar, etc. But poor persons who can’t afford expensive offerings can also pay their respects to the Lord by just bathing it with water.
